I still can’t believe I started 2020 with conjunctivitis and a cold. I have not felt like this in forever and I am counting down the days, hours and minutes till my appointment on Thursday where I hope my Dr will give me clearance to wear masacara again!
This whole situation was an entire wake up call for me, and made me realize that I do not do a good job managing my make up, and when I should be tossing things in the trash. I am embaressed to say that my Urban Decay eyeshadow palette is probably over 5 years old, and I swear is the reason I got conjunctivitis. I was in the mood for a smokey eye on NYE so I used the eyeshadow to line my bottom lid, and I think that is why I looked like I went 10 rounds in a boxing match.
After cleaning up my makeup and moving everything to my new bag (see image below) I went online to see how long you should keep things, and when you should toss them.
Take notes ladies:
Mascara and Liquid Eyeliner – Toss after 3 – 4 months
Pencil Eyeliner – If you sharpen your pencil with every use it should be good for up to 2 years!
Liquid Foundation – If its stored away from heat it is good for 6-8 months
Lipstick – good for up to a year
Lip Gloss – its good for up to 6 months (I think I have some well over a year – lol)
Powders (blush, bronzer or face poweder) – Unless they give off a funny smell or have changed in color you can use it safely for 18 months to 2 years
Concealer – can last up to a year if they’re kept tightly closed and stored in cool dark place. Some people actually recommend you get a new bottle every 6 to 8 months
Eyeshadow – can last up to 4 years as long as you clean your brushes (which looks like I didn’t)
Now, lets talk brushes! This is where I fall short – Beautyblender (my favorite) or any sponge should be tossed after 3 months. Make up brushes that you use around the eye should be cleaned twice a month, and all others once a month. My favorite make up cleaner is from Amazon – and its super quick (see below)! I actually cleaned my brushes yesterday and was able to put them away quickly because of the fast drying time.
In general – if your makeup smells bad or has changed color its time to throw it away! Its OK ladies – who doesn’t love new makeup from Sephora!
Love to hear your feedback.
