At Home Takeout: Steak and Cheese Calzone

During this time when restaurants are closed and going out is on hold, I am cooking nonstop.  Some days it can be an easy 30-minute meal, and other days I am trying to replicate a takeout favorite like this steak and cheese calzone.  This is one is very easy to make and will be a major crowd pleaser for the family.  From start to finish you are probably looking at 30-45 mins before dinner is on the table.  So, let’s look at how this goodness is made.

What you will need:

  • 2 premade pizza dough (this is a always on grocery list)
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 lb. shredded shaved beef (I do run my knife through it to make sure its bite size pieces and makes cooking quicker)
  • 1 onion thinly sliced (half moons is what you want)
  • 1 lb. mozzarella cheese (who doesn’t love cheese)

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425
  2. Steak filling: melt butter in pan and throw onions. Season onions with salt and cook down – about 5 minutes. Add steak and season with salt and pepper and cook through about 5-10 mins.  You want them the meat to be cooked through and brown.
  3. Dough: roll both pizza dough out to fit pan. I used rectangle baking pan to make the calzone (I used a 15×10 pan).   Make sure to spray your baking pan with cooking spray or you can use butter for the dough to not stick.
  4. Assembly: place one layer of dough on the bottom of pan, then add steak with onion mix. Add cheese (leave about 1/2 cup of cheese for later). Top with second pizza dough. Make sure to seal the edges so none of the yummy goodness comes out – I twisted the ends together. Use the remaining cheese to sprinkle on top.
  5. Place in oven and cook for 20-25 minutes or until the dough is cooked through.
  6. Serve with your favorite sauce – I used jarred marinara sauce.

Enjoy!!!
